Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician Cross Skill Programme
ASET Training is set to deliver the ECITB Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician Cross Skill Programme from Q1 2027, supporting skilled technicians looking to transfer their existing experience into the growing wind sector. Expressions of interest for ASET’s first cohort are now open.
Developed by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) in partnership with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, the six-week programme has been designed to support worker transferability between oil & gas and wind operations and maintenance.
Following two successful pilot cohorts in 2025, including one delivered in Aberdeen, the programme was officially launched in 2026 and provides an industry-designed pathway for experienced technicians to build on their existing skills and prepare for opportunities across onshore and offshore wind.
Build on existing technical skills
Rather than starting again, the programme recognises the technical knowledge and experience workers already have and builds additional wind-specific capabilities around them.
It is designed for existing:
- Electrical Technicians
- Mechanical Technicians
- Instrument & Control Technicians
Participants develop knowledge across the other technical disciplines alongside wind-specific safety and technical training. The programme combines ECITB technical pathways with GWO-accredited training and has been shaped around the skills required within wind operations and maintenance.
What does the programme include?
Across the six-week programme, participants will undertake a comprehensive package of technical and safety training. Current programme content includes ECITB technical pathways across electrical, mechanical and instrument & control disciplines; GWO Basic Safety Training and Basic Technical Training; Enhanced First Aid; Slinger Signaller and Advanced Rescue Training; the Energy Institute Wind Turbine Safety Rules Core Course; and training covering wind industry awareness, SCADA, high-voltage switchgear and condition monitoring.
The programme also includes practical wind turbine site experience, helping participants put their technical learning into the context of a working turbine environment.
On successful completion, participants receive an ECITB certificate of training alongside the relevant GWO training records reflected in their WINDA profile.
