The transition from oil and gas to renewable energy is one of the most significant workforce challenges - and opportunities - facing the UK today. Supporting this shift is the Wind Cross Skills Pilot, a ground-breaking initiative designed to equip experienced oil and gas technicians with the capabilities required to succeed in the offshore wind sector.
Launched by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) in collaboration with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, the programme is helping to build the bridge between two vital industries — preserving experience, enabling mobility, and accelerating the energy transition.
Recognising the wealth of experience in the oil and gas industry, the pilot focuses on transferring this knowledge to wind energy operations. Participants undergo a comprehensive training regimen that includes:
Technical Pathways: Electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation training tailored for wind turbine systems.
GWO Certification: Essential safety and operational training for offshore wind environments.
On-Site Familiarisation: Hands-on experience with wind turbine components and maintenance procedures.
This dual focus on theory and practice ensures that learners not only gain new qualifications but also build confidence in applying their skills in the field.
One recent participant, Billy, shared that “Ed and Chris were very knowledgeable in the subjects and were keen to adapt the training for the GWO courses”
The pilot has seen successful implementations in key Scottish locations:
Grangemouth: Eight learners completed the six-week program, gaining valuable skills for the wind sector.
Aberdeen: An additional seven participants are set to conclude their training, further strengthening the region's renewable energy workforce.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort to integrate renewable energy training into Scotland's industrial hubs, ensuring a sustainable and skilled workforce for the future.
The Wind Cross Skills Pilot exemplifies a "just transition" a commitment to providing workers with the training and opportunities needed to thrive in the evolving energy landscape. By leveraging existing skills and offering targeted training, the program facilitates a seamless shift from traditional energy sectors to renewable industries.
This initiative not only supports individual career growth but also contributes to the UK's broader goals of achieving net-zero emissions and fostering sustainable energy practices.
The success of the Wind Cross Skills Pilot paves the way for expanded training programs and increased collaboration between industries. As the demand for renewable energy continues to rise, initiatives like this are crucial in building a resilient and adaptable workforce.
