Are You Still Qualified to Do the Work You’ve Been Doing?

From October 2026, significant updates to the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) will change how competence is demonstrated across the electrotechnical sector. For many electricians, particularly those working in EV charging installations and periodic inspection and testing, these updates could directly affect the scope of work, sign-off rights, and future opportunities.

For those carrying out EV charging or Periodic Inspection and testing of Electrical Installations, the updated requirements are particularly clear. Electricians will need a recognised Level 3 qualification.

The EAS framework is used by all electrotechnical certification bodies, meaning the updated requirements will apply across the industry.

‘Employed persons’ refers to anyone engaged by your business to carry out electrotechnical work. This may include directly employed staff, agency workers, subcontractors, self-employed individuals or sole traders.

Transitional Arrangements and Qualification Changes

In addition to the October 2026 deadline, changes affecting new applicants came into force in January 2026. Certain legacy qualifications that were previously accepted will no longer be valid for new entrants, although transitional routes may apply for those who achieved qualifications before the cut-off date.

If you currently carry out EV charger installations, Periodic Inspection and testing of Electrical Installations, work on solar or battery systems, or sign off electrical work under a Competent Person Scheme, you should review your qualifications now.

Waiting until late 2026 risks training bottlenecks, reduced scheme scope, and unnecessary disruption to your business operations. Acting early allows you to protect your current work profile while positioning yourself for growth in emerging sectors
