CompEx Certification - MARITIME Industry

Protecting Offshore Assets and Marine Operations

The maritime sector is unique: fleets transporting over 80 % of global trade often carry massive fuel volumes - for example, some cruise ships hold between 1–2 million gallons of fuel. These environments are inherently high-risk.

The shift from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) has introduced a new layer of complexity: while more environmentally friendly, LNG presents significantly greater explosion risks than HFO due to its higher energy content and storage as a cryogenic liquid.

Real-World Training for Real-World Conditions

The move to LNG-propelled vessels has changed the game for hazardous-area safety in the marine world. LNG systems require cryogenic storage tanks, vaporisers, and dedicated fuel-supply systems - all of which must be designed and operated in accordance with ATEX/IEC standards.

Beyond propulsion systems, typical marine hazards include flammable liquids and vapours found in lubrication, hydraulics, ventilation, and chemical storage. Personnel operating in such zones must understand how to identify ignition sources, apply correct classification of hazardous areas, and maintain compliant equipment.

REALITY WITHOUT THE RISK

ASET is one of the UK’s leading CompEx-approved training centres, trusted by organisations across high-risk sectors - including marine, offshore, and energy industries. Our purpose-built CompEx Hazardous Areas Training Centre was the first of its kind in the world and continues to set the benchmark for practical hazardous area training.

With modern assessment bays for gas, vapour, dust, and mechanical competence, delegates gain hands-on experience that mirrors real-world maritime and offshore conditions. Training scenarios replicate equipment and systems commonly found on vessels and platforms, such as fuel handling systems, pump rooms, and electrical control units.

Led by instructors with extensive offshore and marine experience, ASET’s CompEx training combines technical knowledge with practical application - ensuring delegates leave confident, compliant, and fully prepared to maintain safety across all marine and offshore operations.
