About this course
Target Audience
This qualification is suitable for practicing mechanical operatives who are involved in installing, inspecting and maintaining non-electrical (mechanical) equipment in locations where gases, vapours and/or dusts can potentially create a hazardous area.
Key Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge to allow identification of the correct national regulations, directives and IEC standards which are applicable to hazardous locations containing non-electrical (mechanical) equipment.
- Understanding of the correct criteria and descriptors used to classify a hazardous location.
- Ability to recognise the correct characteristics of common hazardous gases, vapours and dusts discussed during the course.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic method and requirements for non-electrical equipment for hazardous locations (constructional safety ‘c’, control of ignition source ‘b’ and liquid immersion ‘k’)
- Demonstrate an understanding of how certified Ex non-electrical and electrical equipment maintains its protection concept and how it is to be selected, installed, inspected and maintained.
- Demonstrate an understanding of required correct equipment selection and leak testing requirements e.g. flange, gaskets, bolts and use of current industry flange installation practices.

Assessment
Each delegate will undertake a multiple-choice examination paper to demonstrate they have achieved the key learning outcomes detailed above.
Certification
CompEx National Certificate of Core Competence.
Required Instructor Qualification/Experience
- SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering/Instrumentation Engineering or equivalent
- Industrial experience with electrical and instrumentation equipment in potentially hazardous areas
- A1 or equivalent Workplace Assessor
- CompEx approved Training Instructor
Min/Max Delegates
3/6, course duration and times may vary depending on delegate numbers. Individual delegate finishing time will depend on the length of time taken for assessment.
Special Requirements
- Delegates must supply proof of relevant mechanical industry qualification on starting the course, e.g. vocational qualification/ time-served apprenticeship certificate.
- Delegates are required to provide their own PPE.
