About this course

Practical Content 70% Theoretical Content 30%

This course is a Credit Rated and Levelled course which leads to a formal qualification upon completion.
The course is recognised within the SCQF framework and contributes to an individual’s Continued Professional Development (CPD).

Target Audience 

Engineers, Technicians, Supervisors and any personnel who have responsibility, or will be assuming responsibility, for the installation or inspection of small bore tubing and fittings.

Key Learning Outcomes 

·         Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of safe working.

·         Illustrate a knowledge and understanding of the preparation, components and condition of small bore tubing pipework.

·         Demonstrate the operation of a performance test of condition of mechanical plant.

·         Ability to interpret the Health and Safety issues related to small bore tubing and pipework.

·         Gain an understanding of the principles of small bore tubing and pipework.


Course Content

  • Pipe and tubing materials & their applications, size and pressure rating, bending and joining processes including compression fittings
  • Threaded fittings, types of thread, assembly procedures and related industry standards
  • Measuring and marking out tubing for accurate bending using bend allowance calculations
  • Tube cutting and bending, use of hand tube bending machines
  • Assembly of compression fittings
  • Hydrostatic pressure test of manufactured assembly


Each delegate will undertake an open book multiple-choice examination paper to demonstrate they have achieved the key learning outcomes detailed above.


SCQF Credit Rated & Levelled Certificate.

Required Instructor Qualification/Experience

·         SVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

·         Minimum 5 years relevant industry experience

·         A1 or equivalent Workplace Assessor

·         ASET approved Training Instructor
