About this course

This course is a Credit Rated and Levelled course which leads to a formal qualification upon completion.
The course is recognised within the SCQF framework and contributes to an individual’s Continued Professional Development (CPD).


Target Audience             

Technicians or Engineers who have previously attended the Hydraulic Engineering Fundamentals course.

Key Learning Outcomes:     

  • To provide delegates with a basic understanding of hydraulic engineering. It is suitable for those who have completed the Hydraulic Engineering Fundamentals course. The course builds on the previous course and introduces delegates to failure analysis of pumps and valves, working with hydraulic systems, logical troubleshooting and open loop proportional hydraulic control systems. The course includes workshop based training each day to reinforce the classroom based training.

Course Content:

  • Knowledge of hydraulic fluids, properties and safe handling
  • The need for pro-active maintenance and what to monitor
  • Different types of hydraulic pump, how they work and failure analysis 
  • Different types of valve and actuator, how they work and failure analysis
  • The application of hose assemblies, where and why they are used and failure analysis
  • Understanding of 700 Bar hydraulics, explanation and associated safety considerations
  • Open loop proportional control
  • Logical troubleshooting skills
  • Introduction to Festo SIM5 software


Each delegate will undertake an open book multiple-choice examination paper to demonstrate they have achieved the key learning outcomes detailed above.


This course is delivered using a range of Festo Didatic Training Rigs in a replicated working environment.


SCQF Level 6 Certificate.

Required Instructor Qualification/Experience  

• SVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• Minimum 5 years relevant industry experience
• A1 or equivalent Workplace Assessor
• ASET approved Training Instructor

Min/Max Delegates

2/6, course duration and times may vary depending on delegate numbers.
