About this course
Personnel with an electrical or instrumentation background who are involved in the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation equipment for use in potentially hazardous areas both onshore and offshore. This course is also applicable for personnel from a non-Electrical or Instrumentation background who merely wish to establish an appreciation of Ex Hazardous Areas. However, it is worth noting non Electrical or Instrumentation personnel can only be issued with a CSNV certification and not a full CompEx certificate.
To train and prepare delegates for competence assessment to nationally set standards for the installation and inspection of explosion protected equipment.
• General principles, ignition properties and apparatus protection
• Standards, Certification and marking
• Flameproof Ex’d’ protection
• Increased safety Ex’e’
• Type Ex’n’ protection
• Pressurisation Ex’px’, Ex’py’ and Ex’pz’ protection
• Intrinsic safety Ex’ia’, ‘ib’ and ‘ic’ protection
• Other methods of protection, Ex’o’, Ex’q’ and Ex’m’
• Combined (hybrid) methods of protection
• Wiring systems, enclosure entries, cable glanding and earthing
• Inspection and maintenance to BS / IEC 60079-17
• Sources of ignition
• Induction to competence validation testing
• Permit to work system and safe isolation
• Practical Assessments
• Online exam
- EX01 Preparation and installation of EEx 'd', 'e', 'n' and 'p' systems.
- EX02 Inspection and maintenance of EEx 'd', 'e', 'n' and 'p' systems.
- EX03 Preparation and installation of EEx 'ia' and 'ib' systems.
- EX04 Inspection and maintenance of EEx 'ia' and 'ib' systems.
- Online multiple choice Exam
The majority of this course is practical hands on training delivered by fully qualified and experienced ex industry personnel using equipment replicated from the onshore and offshore oil and gas working environment. Teaching aids include: Power point presentations, questionnaires, practical examples and demonstrations
CompEx National Certificate of Core Competence – valid for 5 years from date awarded. Refresher course to be undertaken prior to 5-year expiry date otherwise 5-day CompEx Course to be retaken.
Note: non-electrical/instrumentation personnel who complete the course are issued with an CSNV CompEx Certificate.
JT Limited, the awarding body for CompEx, commit to 15 working days for certification on receipt of the paperwork from the ASET Centre. Therefore a delegate should receive their certification, by post, within 25 working days. ASET have no control over the certification timescales.
Minimum Instructor Qualification/Experience
• SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering / Instrumentation & Controls or equivalent
• Industrial experience with electrical and instrumentation equipment in potentially hazardous areas
• A1 or equivalent Workplace Assessor
• CompEx Trainer/Assessor License
Min/Max Delegates Required
4/24, course duration and times may vary depending on delegate numbers. Individual delegate finishing time will depend on the length of time taken for assessment.
Delegates are required to provide the following:
- Their own PPE (coveralls, safety glasses & safety footwear)
- Evidence of relevant vocational qualifications, either electrical or instrumentation, on starting the course (e,g, Apprenticeship certificate, Level 3 NVQ/SVQ or ECS/SJIB card.
